First paparazzi work from conceptual artists Ringma and Miller, which then morphed into Bettie visits CBGB’s – 10 original photographs with and shot by Ringma and Miller featuring Andy Warhol, Angela Davis, Alain Robbe-Grillet, George McGovern, Joseph Hirshhorn, Bella Abzug, Larry Wilton (a bowery face), Joey Ramone, policemen and patriotic americans. The project was first shown at photoworks in the spring of 1977. “Paparazzi Self-Portraits” was our way to harness the power of art and engage real life for our own amusement and purposes. Each picture had its own logic and generated its own story. Some paid homage to personal heroes; others expanded our world. When exhibited together in art galleries, however, the pictures had the didactic quality of conceptual art, raising questions about reality, deception, art and propaganda.”
