Set against the backdrop of bleak 1980’s London, an extraordinary group of young people came together through the gay underground club scene, forming an avant garde nucleus of artists, filmmakers, designers and performers. Most were at art college studying the history they wanted to become a part of and surviving by living in squats or council flats. By night they were fabulous posers’already famous, their very own creations’fuelling the scene with their energy and originality. They are now part of a unique artistic heritage that has made London the cultural and creative powerhouse it is today. The ten portraits here including Leigh Bowery, Trojan, Cerith Wyn Evans, John Maybury, Michael Clark, Princess Julia, Jeffery Hinton, Stephen Linard, Angus Cook and Dencil Williams offer an insider’s view of some of the characters from this group’at work, at home, or after the party has finished.
