So rare that many didn’t believe it actually existed. The story of Mckell’s Subculture begins in 1978, when after graduating from art school McKell began to document the second wave of 2 tone/skinhead culture. Assisted by a young Nick Knight, McKell travelled to Southend, through north and east London and hung out around ‘The Last Resort’, a legendary skinhead shop and meeting place on Petticoat Lane. Around 20 copies were sold at the time, with the remainder being given to prospective clients or kept by McKell in his archive. Nick Knight used one of McKell’s images from the book in his later publication ‘Skinhead’ which went on to become a bible for those interested in skinhead culture. The book has achieved a strong cult following- known to many, but due to scarcity seen by very few.
