“Landscapes both verdant and desolate, decrepit architecture, and the found poetry of roadside signage’were printed in 2002, from negatives shot between 1965 and 1974, in the Mississippi Delta region (where the photographer lives) and on road trips to Las Vegas and Los Angeles, among other locations. Car upholstery appears as slick and bright as fresh blood; Coca-Cola ads, ketchup bottles on a fast-food counter, and Valentine’s Day decorations in a supermarket window lend the scenes a hyperreal intensity.”
