In 1999, a young Brazilian photographer working with a borrowed camera won the Ian Parry Photojournalism Award for a project she'd shot on the streets of her own country. The subject: girls living homeless in Brazil's cities who survived by disguising themselves as boys, a defence against the constant threat of sexual violence. Girls who, in Valverdes' words, dressed up as their mothers once might have - if they'd had mothers, or homes, or mirrors that weren't shop windows.
